Canada’s First Large-Scale BECCS Project to Use Real-Time Carbon Tracking Tech

In a major step toward digitizing and scaling carbon removal, Carbon Alpha has partnered with Mangrove Systems to deploy advanced real-time monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) technology for its North Star project—Canada’s first industrial-scale Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) facility.

The project, located in Saskatchewan, will capture carbon emissions from forestry waste processed at the Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) Bioenergy Centre and permanently store them in deep geological formations. Once operational, North Star is expected to deliver up to 90,000 carbon removal credits annually, contributing significantly to Canada’s net-zero 2050 ambitions while generating economic benefits for Indigenous and rural communities.

“This partnership marks a major step forward in our mission to deliver credible, measurable climate solutions,” said Patrick Elliott, COO of Carbon Alpha.

Digital MRV: A New Standard for Carbon Removal Integrity

At the heart of this initiative is Mangrove’s digital MRV platform, which brings unprecedented real-time traceabilityto the carbon removal process. The system aggregates data from:

  • Field sensors and capture units
  • Injection and storage facilities
  • Third-party validators and registries

The platform uses tamper-proof ledgers and integrates with blockchain-backed registries, offering end-to-end transparency that is critical for investor confidence and regulatory compliance.

“North Star is a model for the future of scalable, high-integrity carbon removal,” noted Brandon Vlaar, CEO of Mangrove Systems.

By automating data collection and certification workflows, Mangrove’s technology is expected to accelerate the issuance of carbon credits, making the project not only climate-responsible but also financially efficient.

Blueprint for the Future of Carbon Markets

The North Star project serves as a replicable model for other BECCS and engineered carbon removal projects globally, offering a high-integrity approach that blends indigenous-led resource stewardship with cutting-edge digital infrastructure.

With rising demand for verified carbon credits and mounting pressure for climate action, this collaboration sets a new benchmark in the carbon markets for speed, scale, and accountability.

Backed by both public and private sector support, including indigenous governance, North Star’s digitally enabled framework could pave the way for more trustworthy and investable carbon removal ventures around the world.
